Voldemort's Army

What better to make a recruitment poster for than The Dark Lord's army? I tried to give this piece an authentic feel to it; I wanted to make it seem like this could actually be on the walls of Diagon Alley. Hope you HP fans out there like, and I'm so excited about HP7 Part 1!

WAR PIGS!

Started up my next project this week; my twist on a fairy tale. I had a blast drawing this, and I started value studies today so I'll be painting away very soon!

Tarot Card

This is my Tarot Card I designed for my Image Making class. Each of my classmates drew a number blindly and I ended up getting The Fool - the main character of the Tarot game. I had a lot of fun doing this, I hope you like it!

Value and Color Studies

These are really basic value and color studies for my line drawing I posted a couple days ago. There's still going to be a lot of tweaking with a lot of elements, so these are in no way set in stone as of right now. The glow on the hands will be dulled down a LOT and the ground level and rocks will be changed in value here in there. I was also taking this opportunity to start laying in a few textures that I thought would emphasize certain areas of the piece. Just giving you a glimpse on the process I'm going through, I probably won't post anymore of this project until it is completed. And I've got my Image Making tarot card in the works as well!

Have a good week, world.

School!!

My second sophomore semester at school has officially begun so I haven't obviously uploaded anything new to the blog in quite some time. I decided to upload the preliminary drawing to my first piece of the year which is for my Illustration Techniques 2 class. We were each assigned a fortune from a fortune cookie and we had to elaborate abstractly from whatever we were given to illustrate. My fortune is "The first step to better things is to imagine them." I won't go into any detail on why I chose to do what I did, that is left up to you to figure out :)

I'll start value studies tonight and painting tomorrow!

The Goon

Within the past two months I've become extremely infatuated (or obsessed) with The Goon by Eric Powell. It's an amazing Dark Horse comic series and I've been getting my hands on every volume I can possibly find. So, naturally, while without a computer, I did a few Goon studies and this is my final result of the character drawn from my head. It still has some of my own twists as you can see, but I really studied how Powell mapped out Goon's face, which is distinctly the most important part of the character, next to his stature which I exaggerated in classic Dieter fashion.

Enjoy!

Flaaapjaaaack!

No, I didn't die, but I have been computer-less for quite some time. I'm still awaiting my new one from a white shirt-black tie wearing squad of geeks who will remain unnamed. But don't worry! I continue to draw everyday, and whilst I was without Photoshop, I went back to practicing graphite. This is one of the drawings I did recently - my own interpretation of the lovable Flapjack. Here's what he normally looks like if you aren't familiar:

Flapjack is my favorite cartoon, it's hilarious and the art direction is fantastic. Don't worry, I'll have plenty more uploads when I actually have a computer to use at my disposal. In the meantime, you better be drawing everyday you fellow artists, you.

Take care,
Dieter

Demon Troll Witch Doctor?!

Did this quick demon troll witch doctor (they are real now) just for some lighting practice and what not. Pretty fun. I love digital painting!

Also, if you haven't seen it yet, check out the new trailer for Guillermo Del Toro's "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark". He's such an inspiration to me, as well as many many other people, I really wish to be able to work with him someday.

I'd like to be able to develop this troll a lot further than what you see here. Hopefully a full body rendering will be in the near future :).
